Endowment Welcomes New Staff
We are pleased to announce two new members of the John Rex Endowment team. Kate Shirah has been hired as program director, and Mary Stevenson is our new staff accountant.

"Kate and Mary have strong skills in their areas of expertise, and they are both very knowledgeable about our community and have a strong commitment to helping others," said president and CEO Kevin Cain. "The addition of a program director marks an important step in the development of our organization."

Kate Shirah, Program Director
As program director, Kate Shirah will assist in proposal development while concentrating the John Rex Endowment's resources on the best strategies for making change. Shirah has a wide range of experience in public health, including direct program development and management, intervention strategy, teaching and research.

Shirah earned both her master's in public health in health behavior and health education and bachelor's degree in health policy and administration from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"Kate's education and experience in public health will influence the Endowment's new emphasis on a clear theory of change and best practices to make that change," said Kevin Cain, president and CEO of the John Rex Endowment.

Prior to joining the John Rex Endowment, Shirah worked as an instructor and field training coordinator in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the UNC-CH School of Public Health. She also served as a consultant for the Center of Excellence for Training & Research Translation at the UNC-CH Center for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention.

Featured Resource: The National Children's Study
The National Children's Study will examine the effects of environmental influences on children's health and development by following more than 100,000 children from across the United States from before birth until age 21. Congress recently appropriated nearly $111 million for the study, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The large amount of information collected is likely to influence child health policy and interventions for many years. Learn more and get involved.

New Trail Opens in Apex at Middle Creek Elementary
First Phase of Three-Year Grant from John Rex Endowment
New Trail Opens in Apex at Middle Creek Elementary
Kids, parents, teachers and members of the community can now get moving on the new trail at Middle Creek Elementary. A three-year $30,000 grant from the John Rex Endowment provided resources to build the trail and develop a unique walking program at the school, which will begin in early August 2008.

Students from Key Clubs at Middle Creek, Green Hope and Apex high schools, as well as PTA members and Kyle Fisher of Fishers Landscaping, rallied together to build the trail over the past few months. "The completion of the new trail has truly been a community-wide effort, and both students and community members are out walking and running already," said Mimi Shankin, president of the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) at Middle Creek Elementary.

"Accessibility to the right resources, such as nearby trails, is important as we address the issues surrounding childhood obesity," said Kevin Cain, president and CEO of the John Rex Endowment. "Middle Creek Elementary has exhibited a high level of commitment to creating a community environment which promotes and supports physical activity for youth at their school as well as families and the surrounding community."

Over the next two years, the school plans to add challenging stations to the trail, provide teacher training, and increase physical education awareness throughout the school and community. The new trail, located at 110 Middle Creek Park Avenue in Apex, NC, will also be open to the public seven days a week.

Middle Creek Elementary is one of 15 elementary schools selected to receive $30,000 through a three-year Wake to Wellness grant ($10,000 each year), from the John Rex Endowment, to provide support for new projects that create healthier school environments. In an initial phase of a long-term commitment to a Healthy Weight Initiative, the John Rex Endowment has dedicated $2.5 million to combat childhood obesity.

Request for Proposal: Nutrition
As the John Rex Endowment continues to support a Healthy Weight Initiative for children, we will be announcing an RFP in July for programs and projects aimed at improving nutrition.  The announcement will be made July 7 and letters of interest will be due July 24.
