Purpose: The purpose is to build on two existing programs to respond to an increasing demand for healthy foods by improving access to fresh fruits and vegetables for underserved communities and helping them learn to value and utilize these foods.
How:
- Expand the reach of OFL (Operation Frontline) classes in Wake County by building partner agency capacity and providing implementation grants to offer classes.
- Train and equip youth with tools and education around the trade and importance of local food systems.
- Mini-grants for youth to build gardens and/or local food programs in Wake County low income communities.
Outcomes:
- Process outcomes such as development of curricula, established grant process.
- Short-term outcomes such as number of partners implementing OFL classes at least 4 times per year; increase in healthy eating behaviors among graduates of OFL classes at partner sites; number of youth completing training program; and number of new community garden or local food projects implemented by youth.
- Long-term outcomes such as increased demand in local, fresh produce among low-income communities.
